Did you know that 5% of babies hold their breath when they get upset, thus causing them to pass out? Yep. I didn't know this either until today.
Today I discovered that Jude is in that 5%. They're called breath holding spells and according to Jude's pediatrician they are harmless (unless he conks his head on something) and there's nothing I can do about 'em.
Jude got mad when I took away a plastic chair he kept standing on. He started to cry (normal), held his breath (somewhat normal-- I usually just blow on his face), but then he turned blue, his eyes got giant, and he passed out, tumbling backwards to the ground. I thought I was going to pass out from panicking! I scooped him up, blew on his face and held him really close. He came to in a few seconds and was back to his normal/ happy self a couple minutes later. I am the one who is still trying to recover.
My mother-in-law says Chris used to hold his breath, too. If this is any indicator of my child's strong will, I am now certain that he has inherited his dad's wherewithal to get what he wants.
Every parent wants an exceptional baby. Trust me: I'd prefer it if he were in the other 95% on this one.

I'll talk to him
That was tara
I used to babysit kids that did this (the mom warned me on the way out the door on my first day on the job!) It can be pretty scary, but your doc is right...once they pass out, they start breathing again. Yay! Isn't being a mommy fun?
I don't know if this would help, but when my baby is about to enter a meltdown, I scoop him up and start doing something to distract him/make him laugh...for us it is going up and down the stairs, which he finds hilarious, or bouncing really fast. If I can catch him in the few seconds to decide he's upset, I can usually defuse the situation.
Good luck with your 5% baby!
Yikes! How scary! I'm glad he's ok!
i'm a breath holder. i still have to remind myself to breathe when i cry really hard.
Wow! Scary! I can't imagine seeing my baby do that. So sorry you had to go through that. Btw-your little man is so handsome in today's picture!
Sorry - it's that darn chair!!
Holy crap I love this story. I wouldn't love it as much if it was my kid but as a blog reader, I love it.
oh wow how scary!
glad its normal. if only 5% normal.
I have never heard of this! Crazyness.
Hey, at least it's normal. And good for you taking the chair away, we cant have everything we want even cute little babies need to learn that lol. Poor little guy. Glad he's okay though!
If it makes you feel any better, my friends kid bangs her head against the wall REALLY hard when she gets pissed.
Oh my gosh! You poor thing. That is so crazy!!
I also have a headstrong child but she has never done that! Poor thing.
I used to do that so much as a baby and toddler...I actually still do it to some extent. When I get mad I hold my breath without realizing it, thankfully I don't do it long enough to passout!
